Programa de redução de gases de efeito estufa na Zilia

Greenhouse Gases (GHG) are gaseous substances naturally present in the atmosphere and that absorb part of the infrared radiation emitted by the sun and reflected by the earth’s surface, making it difficult for this radiation (heat) to escape into space.

This natural phenomenon, called the Greenhouse Effect, prevents heat loss, and keeps the planet Earth warm, making it possible to maintain life. However, due to human actions, the concentration of these gases in the atmosphere has been growing year by year, leading to an increase in the average global temperature. The main greenhouse gases internationally regulated by the Kyoto Protocol are: carbon dioxide and methane.

Reports from the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change), warn about several problems related to climate change. Coastal areas will suffer from rising sea levels due to the melting glaciers caused by the increase in the planet’s average temperature. The dry areas of the planet will suffer even more from the lack of drinking water, already scarce in some regions, which could lead to political disputes and deaths. As drought increases, fires may become more frequent, and several species of plants and animals will become extinct. Human health could be severely affected – due to the increase in global temperature, problems such as heat stroke, allergies, mosquito-borne diseases (like dengue fever and malaria), malnutrition and hunger could be intensified.

Zilia, having ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) practices linked to its principles, recognizes that climate effects will also affect social and economic aspects. Thus, the planet’s climate change has been recognized as an environmental strategy factor by Zilia.

A Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory allows the mapping of the sources of GHG emissions of an activity, process, organization, economic sector, city, state or even a country, followed by the quantification, monitoring and recording of these emissions. It is the first step for an organization to contribute to the fight against climate change. From this, the profile of emissions is known and, therefore, it becomes possible to establish reduction or compensation strategies and targets.

Zilia maintains a consistent program to achieve its objectives and goals of emissions reduction, as well as constantly seeks energy efficiency of its operations, the awareness of its employees and partners, encourages internal practices of engagement with its employees and business partners and has initiatives for the use of renewable energy in part of its units.
