The acronym ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) refers to an index that assesses the companies operations according to their impacts on these three axes of sustainability. The adoption of ESG principles brings factors that are crucial for social transformation and directly affect the organization’s results.
Within these 3 axes of ESG, three factors are observed:
- Environmental factors – use of natural resources, greenhouse gas emissions (CO2, Fugitives: fire extinguishers and refrigerant gas), energy efficiency, pollution, waste and effluent management;
- Social factors– employment policies and relations, inclusion and diversity, employee engagement, workforce training, human rights, community relations, privacy and data protection;
- Governance factors – independence of the board, upper management compensation policy, diversity in the composition of the administration board, structure of audit and fiscal committees, ethics and transparency.
Zilia’ ESG
Zilia’ Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) steering committee develop and implement strategies for creating a sustainable world where our people, communities and the environment can thrive. This committee is also responsible for reviewing our policies, evaluations and long-term objectives, and approves public disclosures regarding corporate social responsibility, in the Zilia’ ongoing commitment to ethical behavior and economic development.
Water management
Zilia recognizes water as both a critical global resource and an essential aspect of our business operations. We diligently monitor our water usage management and consistently look for opportunities to reduce our water withdrawal and consumption. For example, we have implemented in our process of packaging semiconductor components in Atibaia/SP, a closed-loop processes that reuse liquid resources as much as possible. We use liquid cooling systems, in which the chillers recycle and reuse water, allowing the site to recycle approximately 60% of the water it withdraws, an improvement of nearly 50% since 2018.
In the figure below, we demonstrate a steady year-over-year increase in water reuse improvement at our factory in Atibaia/SP. We have also expanded our storage capabilities for wastewater treatment, reducing the amount that needs to be transported to a final destination. Outside of our Brazil facilities, the majority of our water usage is in office environments, where we minimize water usage by utilizing low-flow bathrooms and water efficient landscaping.

Water reuse
At all Zilia sites, water withdrawals are metered and recorded by local government. The sanitary wastewater is sent to a treatment station before being discharged into a fresh surface water source.
Water Stress
We are conscious of the water stress levels of the areas from which we withdraw water. Using the World Resources Institute’s Water Risk Atlas tool, we’ve determined that none of our factories withdraw from high-stress areas.
Our site in Atibaia/SP is the largest consumer of water, which has a local water stress level of “Low-Medium”.
“The ESG program came to consolidate once and for all Zilia’s management system, which already comprises the pillars of Environment, Social and Governance. With this agenda of our executives, our management system became even more aligned with the company’s strategy. Another point to be highlighted at Zilia is the active participation of Upper Management in defining objectives that are fully aligned with ESG and SDG. I’m very proud to be part of this winning team that is already collaborating to create a more sustainable world”, declares Laércio Sanches – Quality, Safety, Environment and Health Manager at Zilia.
